Client Description

It all began with a pen... Florida Hospital Waterman was founded in 1938 as a legacy of Frank Waterman, president of the Waterman Fountain pen Company. In 1938, Mr. Waterman turned the elegant Fountain Inn in downtown Eustis over to a group of local doctors for use as a hospital, and the new Lake County Medical Center was to become the major cornerstone of health care in Lake County. For over 70 years, Florida Hospital Waterman has continued its commitment to the health care needs of our community, and has progressed from an 18-bed county hospital to a 269-bed acute care facility. In 1992 Florida Hospital Waterman merged with the Adventist Healthcare System and became part of a worldwide network that has given Lake County residents access to state-of-the-art technology and programs within the Florida Hospital System. Among other things, this includes one of the largest cardiac centers in the nation, as well as specially equipped patient helicopter transport service. In August, 2003 the hospital opened the doors of its replacement facility on Hwy 441 in Tavares. The 450,000 square foot facility offers the latest in medical technology. Each patient room is private, and the uniquely designed "clover leaf" patient care units consist of 60 beds per floor. The Emergency Department is sized to accommodate up to 60,000 visits per year.

Community Description

The Citrus Tower, built in 1956, once drew awestruck tourists to its observation deck for panoramic views of Lake County's sprawling citrus groves. For as far as the eye could see, there were dark, leafy rows over which a seemingly infinite number of oranges were sprinkled. When the season was right and the wind was gently blowing, the fragrance of orange blossoms could be even more intoxicating than the view. The tower is still there, but the landscape has changed. Now you'll see thousands of new homes on the rolling hills that have always distinguished burgeoning Lake County from its topographically challenged neighbors. There are still groves, woods, barns and more than 1,400 lakes scattered across 221 square miles. The county's unpretentious municipalities still boast quaint business districts with mom-and-pop shops. South Lake County has increasingly become an attractive suburban alternative for people who work in more populous Orange and Seminole counties.
