ACADEMIC PULMONARY/CRITICAL CARE (Position 3-309-929) – The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Maryland Baltimore seeks a BE/BC pulmonary and critical care physician for our expanding critical care program. This position will cover both day shifts and evening and overnight shifts in our MICUs at the University of Maryland Medicine Center and the University of Maryland Midtown Campus locations. Faculty rank, tenure status and salary will be commensurate with experience, although we anticipate the position will be as Assistant Professor on the non-tenure track.

Applicants who are BE/BC in pulmonary and critical care medicine and have a strong interest in teaching and clinical research are preferred.

Cardiology	The Heart Institute is a state-of-the-art, centralized service that provides a complete continuum of cardiac care including open-heart surgery, a cardiac surgery unit, an all-digital Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, Cardiographics featuring ICAEL accredited echo laboratory, Electrophysiology Lab, Nuclear Medicine, 20-bed cardiac unit, hospital-wide monitoring capabilities and a Cardiovascular Fitness program. The STEMI LifeNet system in Baltimore County ambulances transmits cardiac information directly to UM-SJMC's ER so that emergency staff and cardiologists are ready for emergency cardiac patients prior to their arrival.

Onocology	The Cancer Institute is the only NCI Community Cancer Center Program in Maryland. It features a patient-centered, multidisciplinary approach to cancer care under one roof with a large, sunny infusion center, Radiation Oncology and new Women's Center, composed of the Breast Center (accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Cancer) and Gynecologic Oncology. A full range of clinical trials and psychosocial support services are available. Climate - Opinion	Located on the Mid-Atlantic coast, Baltimore was built at the mouth of the Patapsco River, which empties directly into the Chesapeake Bay. The city is protected from harsh weather variations year-round by the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Appalachian Mountains due west. Freezing temperatures generally do not occur after mid-April or before the end of October, allowing the area approximately 194 frost-free days. Precipitation, averaging 41 inches annually, tends to be equally distributed throughout the year, but the greatest amounts accrue during summer and early fall the thunderstorm and hurricane seasons, respectively. Since snow is often mixed with rain and sleet due to Baltimore's relatively mild winter temperatures, freezing rain is considered a greater hazard to motorists and pedestrians than the infrequent snowfall that remains on the ground more than several days.

The burgeoning life sciences market is having a significant impact on the construction and leasing activity in Baltimore City. With the first building at the University of Maryland BioPark an overwhelming success, a second building encompassing 220,000 square feet is under construction and due to come online this summer. When completed, the entire UMB BioPark will comprise 10 acres and up to 10 lab and office buildings, as well as garages and retail space. The health care sector is also driving office absorption throughout Greater Baltimore. In recent months, Maxim Healthcare Services (170,000 square feet), CareFirst of Maryland (87,000 square feet), Thomson Prometric (85,000 square feet), LifeBridge Health (60,000 square feet) and Columbia Medical (30,000 square feet) have all executed sizeable leases. Health care, however, is hardly alone. The financial services sector is also making a huge impact here. The largest new building in the metropolitan area, the 510,000-square-foot 1st Mariner Bank building, was completed last year and came onto the market 67 percent pre-leased. And just last month, Legg Mason agreed to lease up to 400,000 square feet in the soon-to-be-built, mixed-use complex in Baltimore¿s Inner Harbor East.
