Position Description:

This position is at a practice owned and managed by Scotland Health Care System in Laurinburg, NC.  The practice is located 20 minutes from Scotland Memorial Hospital and has one experienced Ob-Gyn physician, Dr. Samuel Cummings. There are three additional Ob-Gyn physicians in hospital owned practices and one private practice physician. Two Certified Nurse Midwives and a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner are also employed at area offices.

Deliveries will take place in Laurinburg at Scotland Memorial Hospital which has four (4) LDRs, full time anesthesia and pediatric coverage, and a Level II Nursery.  A $2.7 million dollar renovation to our Women’s Services Department at Scotland Memorial Hospital is almost complete. We are seeking candidates with at least 2 years of CNM experience.

Laurinburg is a family-oriented community 35 minutes from Pinehurst, 45 minutes from Fayetteville, and less than 2 hours from Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington, Greensboro, and Myrtle Beach. 


Scotland Physicians Network (SPN), operated by Scotland Health Care System, consists of five (5) primary care and three (3) specialty physician practices, including Women’s Health Care Centers in Laurinburg, Pembroke, and Bennettsville, SC.   The Network is governed by a Physician Network Leadership Council (PNLC) to ensure the development and implementation of approved strategies, tactics, policies and procedures in all practices that comprise the integrated physician network. It is an expectation providers comply with established policies and procedures.

Scope of Responsibilities: 

This position requires a provider who is trained as a certified nurse midwife and who is certified in his or her specialty, has an active NC license, and DEA prescribing authority. This position also requires a provider who embraces Scotland Health Care System’s core values and demonstrates a strong commitment to provide excellent patient centered, high quality, compassionate health care. Providers will also be expected to obtain a SC license before or after employment in case periodic office coverage may be needed at the office in Bennettsville, SC.

Volume Expectations: 

Following orientation, the average daily patient volume is expected to be approximately 20-24 patients per 8 hour day. Close to 700 babies are delivered per year at Scotland Memorial Hospital, with an expected average for this position of 15 deliveries per month. 

Call Expectations: 

The normal expected call required for this position is Tuesday nights starting at 5 pm and 8-10 additional days during the year, which will likely include some week-end days.


The home practice is currently open Mondays through Thursdays from 8 am until 5 pm, and Fridays from 8 am until noon. To support growth and community need, hours may expand in the future and may vary at different clinics covered by the CNM providers.  It is anticipated that the position will initially consist of a weekly alternating schedule between 2-3 CNM providers covering the office with specified days covering Labor and Delivery.

Compensation Package:

The position will offer a one year salary and the opportunity to earn a Management Incentive Advance of up to 10% of the base. The position qualifies for Scotland Health Care System full time benefits.

Landscape – the Sand Hills of Scotland County mark the shorelines of an ancient ocean where a line of dunes can be seen near adjacent county.  The area has Longleaf Pine Trees, scrubby Blackjack Oaks, interspersed with bogs and swamps, and Knobby-Kneed Cypress Trees.  The Lumber River, a wild and scenic river cloaked in green, wanders through the landscape.

Animal and Plant Life consist of Barred Owls, Ducks, Herons and other waterfowl, Deer and Beaver, Mountain Laurel, Wild Azalea and Spider Lilies and the odd Pitcher Plant.

Outdoor Life – The land gives access to a variety of pursuits including golf, hiking, biking, fishing, local parks, paddle sports, wine tasting, the trails at the Outback Motorsports Complex, Rockingham Speedway, Rockingham Dragway “The Rock”, multiple festivals and events reflecting many cultural textures and traditions.
